חֲמֵשֶׁת הַמִּינִים
Introduction · Challah 1:1 & Menachos 10:7
Two mishnayos
חַלָּה א:א · מְנָחוֹת י:ז
Nearly identical words, in two different places.
The subject
חֲמֵשֶׁת הַמִּינִים
The five grains.
חִטִּים · wheat
שְׂעוֹרִים · barley
כֻּסְמִין · spelt
שִׁבֹּלֶת שׁוּעָל · oats
שִׁיפוֹן · rye
First purpose
חַלָּה
The portion of dough given to the kohen.
Like terumah — and given b’taharah
All five combine to reach the measure
Second purpose
חָדָשׁ
The same five grains, read for the Omer.
Assur to eat until the Omer is brought
And assur even to harvest
So to which year does a grain belong?
The answer — when it took root
Why the same mishnah twice
Two purposes
In Challah it opens the mitzvah of challah; in Menachos it frames the issur of chadash.
Same mishnah — two different questions
