The Eve of Pesach — Three Acts of Preparation
Pesachim 10:1
On the eve of Pesach, close to Mincha time — a person should not eat until dark. And even the poorest person in Israel — should not eat until he reclines. And they must provide him with no fewer than four cups of wine — even if it must come from the charity plate.
Three Acts of Erev Pesach Preparation
This mishnah has three distinct parts — preparing your body, preparing your mind, and ensuring others are prepared too
Part One ·
Physical Preparation
From ~3:30 PM onward, do not eat a full meal. You want an appetite — l'tei'avon — for the mitzvos of eating at the Seder.
Part Two · מַחֲשָׁבָה
Mindset Preparation
Even the poorest person reclines like a king. The physical act of reclining puts you into the mindset of a ben chorin — a free person — ready to give shevach v'hodaah.
Part Three · כְּלַל יִשְׂרָאֵל
Communal Preparation
The community must ensure every poor person has four cups. It is not enough to prepare yourself — you must prepare others too.
The Mincha Threshold
Nine and a half halachic hours into the day — approximately 3:30 PM — a person may no longer eat a full meal
Erev Pesach — Time of Day
Free to eat · morning and early afternoon
~3:30
No full meal · prepare your appetite
Seder begins ·
The Korban Pesach, the Matzah, the Maror — these are all mitzvos of eating. You want to fulfill them with a real appetite. Fruit, a light drink — permitted. A full meal — not permitted. This is the final act of physical preparation: restricting yourself so that you can be truly ready for the night.
Everyone is a King Tonight
The mishnah singles out the poorest person in Israel — and makes two demands: one of him, and one of us
Even the poorest person in Israel does not eat until he reclines. Reclining is not a luxury reserved for the wealthy — it is a halachic obligation for every single Jew. That night, everyone sits like a king. Everyone acts as a ben chorin — a free person with no worries, able to give full attention and full gratitude to Hakadosh Baruch Hu.
The community must provide four cups of wine — even from the charity food plate (the tamchuy). The Mishnah makes this a communal obligation, not a personal one. It is not enough to prepare yourself for the Seder. You must prepare others too. The four cups symbolize freedom — and freedom, that night, belongs to everyone.
This final mishnah has three layers: preparing your body by not eating, preparing your mind by reclining, and preparing others by ensuring the poor have four cups. The third layer is the one we least expect — and the most important. When we prepare for Yom Tov we tend to think of ourselves and what we need to do. This mishnah reminds us that it is not just about us. It is about Klal Yisrael. The Seder night is a night when every Jew sits like a king — and it is our responsibility to make sure that is true for every Jew around us.
