When someone broke Shemittah
what happens to his field — and to its fruit?
A field cleared of thorns in Shemittah
Permissivemay be sown
→ may be sown in year eight
Some: a light plowingjust enough to pull up the thorns
Heavy Roman taxesfarmers could not stop working entirely
Plowed well, or penned with the flock
Restrictivemay not be sown
→ may NOT be sown in year eighta k'nas — a penalty
And the fruit that grew there this year?
Beis ShammaiNo→ penalized: he may not eat it
Beis HillelYes→ no penalty on the fruit
Eating Shemittah fruit — may he thank the owner?
the fruit is hefker: it belongs to everyone
Beis ShammaiNo→ it isn't his to give
Beis HillelYes — with thanks or without→ thanks are just courtesy
Rabbi YehudaFlip the views — here Beis Shammai is the lenient one→ reversed: here Beis Shammai is lenient, Beis Hillel strict
Eduyos lists where Beis Shammai is the lenient one
