4. Apostomos burned the Torah

Perhaps the Sefer Torah of Ezra HaSofer

Many Sifrei Torah?
In Antiochus' time?

5. An idol was set up in the Heichal

King Menashe?
Hadrian's Roman city?

Tisha B'Av · 1. Our fathers may not enter the Land

The meraglim — “you cried for nothing…”

The meraglim

5. The city was plowed over

A Roman way to say: this city is ours now

When? A machlokes
Turnus Rufus?
Hadrian?
A Roman ceremony: oxen plow the city

From Rosh Chodesh Av, we reduce simcha

Not zero simcha — less

Restrictivewe reduce our rejoicing.
Not zero — less

Something to think about

In the second Beis HaMikdash, did they keep these fasts?

Taanis 4:6

The Calamities of the Seventeenth of Tammuz and Tisha B'Av
