The Calamities of the Seventeenth of Tammuz and Tisha B'Av

Five things befell our forefathers on the seventeenth of Tammuz,
and five on the ninth of Av.
On the seventeenth of Tammuz:
the Luchos were broken,
the tamid ceased,
the walls of Yerushalayim were breached,
Apostomos burned the Torah,
and an idol was set up in the Heichal.
On the ninth of Av:
it was decreed our forefathers would not enter the Land,
the Beis HaMikdash was destroyed — the first and the second,
Beitar was captured,
and the city was plowed over.
Once the month of Av begins, we reduce our rejoicing.

what does this mean?

A reading aid, not an exact translation.

This English is a clause-by-clause rendering to help you follow the Hebrew. It is not word-for-word literal, and it is not a transcript of the recorded shiur — the audio carries explanation and context the translation deliberately leaves out.

Mishnah Insights
An amalgam of commentaries, including original insights.

These insights draw on the commentaries to this Mishnah and on the recorded shiur. Those commentaries often rest on earlier sources — the Gemara, the Yerushalmi, the Rishonim, and one another — without always saying so; where they do, we generally cite the one we read. Every commentary consulted is kept, verbatim, with this page.

Part I · Describing
The Day and Its Mourning
The day itself, and how a nation holds its grief. Judaism does not let a catastrophe pass unmarked — it reaches for its oldest language of mourning, fasting, and fixes the loss into the calendar so it returns each year and cannot fade. Yet even here the mesorah refuses to let grief become the whole story: the very masechta of our fast days turns, at its close, toward the most joyous day of the year.
